Jonna Bruinsma

Jonna is a photographer driven by long-term curiosity about people and the places they call home. Based in Amsterdam, she has spent over seven years following communities and families in and around Bari in Southern Italy - an ongoing project exploring how a vibrant youth culture, tradition, religion, and identity shape and reflect one another. Her work keeps returning to the same people and places, finding meaning in daily rituals, small gestures, clothing, and the way a body holds itself in the world.

That same attentiveness carries into her commissioned work. Clients including Amsterdamse Poort, Mondriaan Fonds, Assouline, 4 & 5 Mei Comité, Vrij Nederland, Volkskrant, Gauge 81, Sophie Straat, and Annindriya have all found in her images what makes her documentary work so compelling: a natural ease with people, a love of colour and composition, and the rare ability to make someone forget they're being photographed.
